    Abstract:
21 women were administered prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) to test for the results of using this for induction and stimulation of labor. 11 of the women were induced and 10 were stimulated into labor. Indications for induction of labor were serotinous labor in 5, rhesus-negative blood with sensitization in 3, and premature rupture membranes in 3. Labor stimulation was indicated by primary and secondary inertia of the uterus. In 8 out of 11 women the cervix was maturated. 20 drops/minute were given and then the dosage was gradually increased to 40 drops/minute. In all 11 women contractions of the uterus appeared in 15-30 minutes. The mean duration of contractions was 59.2 +or- 21.2 seconds. The sensitivity of the uterus to oxytocin increased after using PGF2alpha. The duration of labor induction was shorter than labor stimulation and is explained by the presence of labor inertia before the using of PGF2alpha. The duration of labor in nullipara was 10.1 +or- 7.19 hours and in multipara was 5.8 hours. Uterine contraction increased gradually during introduction of PGF2alpha from 20-40 drops/minute. The fetal heart rate before and during stimulation by PGF2alpha was 144 strokes/minute both at the rate of 20 and 40 drops/minute. In the stimulation of labor, the fetal heart rate increased on an average of 20-25 strokes/minute and was accompanied by the increase of the frequency of uterine contractions. In conclusion, PGF2alpha plays an important role in normal uterine contractility of the 3rd period of labor and can be used in prophylaxis of hypotonic labor bleeding. PGF2alpha is very effective for the induction and stimulation of labor and is advantageous for its favorable effect to the fetus and its decreasing of postpartum bleeding.
