    Abstract:
    30 male rats in groups of 10 underwent standard vasectomy with ligation of the vas deferens; vasectomy without ligation of the vas deferens (permitting intraperitoneal drainage of the open vas deferens); or sham vasectomy. Assays (in vivo and in vitro) for serum-mediated immunity to syngeneic spermatozoa were performed with each experimental group 90 days postvasectomy. The tests were the Arthus reaction by footpad swelling response 3 hours following footpad injection of syngeneic spermatozoa, and the release of radioactivity from chromium labeled spermatozoa following incubation with experimental sera, indicating cytotoxic antibodies to spermatozoa. The presence of serum-mediated immunity specific to spermatozoa could be demonstrated only in the group of rats which underwent conventional abdominal vasectomy with ligation of the vas deferens. This group's footpad swelling response (p.01) and the chromium labeled results (p.001) were statistically significant.
