  • Title: [Studies on influencing gonadal function, sexual behavior and growth in the pig by prenatal treatment with testosterone enanthate or estradiol benzoate].
    Author: Schlenker G, Hinz G.
Journal: Arch Exp Veterinarmed; 1974; 28(1):117-33. PubMed ID: 4849786.
    Abstract:
Pregnant sows were injected im with 1 g testosterone enanthate in the 8th and 11th weeks or the 11th and 14th weeks of pregnancy, or with 100 mg estradiol benzoate in the 8th and 11th weeks. Offspring of the treated sows showed partial suppression of differentiation of the hypothalamic sexual and/or erotic centers, including: reduced ovarian function and suppressed female sexual behavior after prenatal treatment with androgen or estrogen; less pronounced male sexual behavior after prenatal estrogen treatment and postpuberal ovariectomy plus androgen treatment of the sow; reduced testicular function and less pronounced male sexual behavior after prenatal androgen treatment; reduction of male sexual behavior after prenatal estrogen treatment. Similar results have been obtained in other species of animals. The treatment had no stimulatory effect on growth, nor did it overcome the sexual odor of boars.
