  • Title: Pregnancy complications following legally induced abortion: an analysis of the population with special reference to prematurity.
    Author: Obel EB.
Journal: Dan Med Bull; 1979 Jul; 26(4):192-9. PubMed ID: 487866.
    Abstract:
A study in Copenhagen involved 7,270 pregnant women who were categorized into 4 groups: 1) 576 women who previously had legal abortions; 2) 1009 women who previously had spontaneous abortions or stillbirths; 3) 2900 women whose previous pregnancies ended in live births; and 4) 2785 women who had never been pregnant, to determine if an induced abortion increases the risks of future pregnancies. For each group a control group was selected matching age, parity, and socioeconomic status. Preliminary interviews before 24 weeks of gestation recorded the women's age, occupation, education, smoking habits, diseases, surgery, contraceptive practices, pregnancy complications, and data of last menstrual period, while a second interview at 28 weeks gestation recorded complications, smoking habits, medication usage, and workload. The study showed there was a correlation between low birth weight or short gestation and the age at delivery, socioeconomic status, education, and smoking habit. The group who had previous abortion differed from the other groups in age, number of previous pregnancies, diseases, gynaecological operations, medication, smoking habits, and socioeconomic status. Therefore, because women with previous abortion differ in many factors relating to low birth weight or short gestation, these factors should be taken into account in future studies.
