  • Title: An analysis of chain-operated for-profit hospitals.
    Author: Ferber B.
Journal: Health Serv Res; 1971; 6(1):49-60. PubMed ID: 4936361.
    Abstract:
Hospitals owned and operated for profit by public stock corporations (chains) are compared with other (privately owned) for-profit hospitals and with nonfederal nonprofit short-term general and special hospitals. Data pertaining to several aspects of operation are presented: number of hospitals, number and location of beds, approval status and presence of selected services, average length of stay, occupancy and staff ratios, and expense ratios. The data are for 1969 and include hospitals operated throughout or acquired during that year by the chains. This report is not intended as an evaluation but rather as a baseline from which future developments may be measured.
