  • Title: The surgical pathology of the reproductive system and breast during oral contraceptive therapy.
    Author: Fechner RE.
Journal: Pathol Annu; 1971; 6():299-319. PubMed ID: 4949369.
    Abstract:
Histologic and cytologic patterns in genital and breast tissue from women taking oral contraceptives (OCs) were reviewed with special emphasis on lesions which may mimic malignancy. Experience with nearly 100 benign and malignant breast lesions removed during OC therapy revealed little change when compared to the corresponding frequent coincidence of certain uterine and breast neoplasms and the use of OCs is inevitable. Some morphologic patterns such as endometrial glandular stromal dissociation and atypical endocervical gland hyperplasia are direct results of the exogenous hormones. The pathologist must be alert to prevent diagnostic errors as new morphologic patterns result from new contraceptive regimens or entirely new hormone preparations.
