  • Title: The relationship of amniotic fluid sodium to the latent period of saline abortion.
    Author: Schulman H, Randolph G.
Journal: Obstet Gynecol; 1972 May; 39(5):679-82. PubMed ID: 5023249.
    Abstract:
To determine the importance of sodium levels in the amniotic fluid in affecting the instillation-to-delivery time in saline abortions, amniotic sodium levels were studied in 150 women of 14-20 weeks gestation undergoing this operation in 1970-1971. No difference was found in sodium levels of those patients not aborting after 3 days and those aborting earlier. Both types of cases were found when sodium concentrations were more or less than 2000 meg/1 in the same general proportions. No relationship was found between parity and response to the hypertonic saline solution or between duration of pregnancy and abortion time or retained placentae. For those patients who do not abort within 3 days, several methods of management are available to the physician. The following methods are not recommended: a second saline instillation, oxytocin induction, or hysterotomy. It is recommended that the patient be followed by the physician for 2 weeks or more before another means of abortion is sought.
