  • Title: [Ovulation and puerperium in the non-lactating woman].
    Author: Lamotte G.
Journal: J Gynecol Obstet Biol Reprod (Paris); 1972; 1(1):13-20. PubMed ID: 5038018.
    Abstract:
After a review of the conflicting literature on the time of first ovulation after childbirth, the author explains why he chose endometrial biopsy on the first day of the first menstruation to determine when ovulation first occurred in 50 postpartum women. 25 women inhibited lactation by diuretics and liquid restriction; these had 44% secretory endometria (indication ovulation) and 4 had ovulated (presumably 14 days before) on Postpartum Days 21, 28, 29 and 30. The 15 women given im Extandron (3 mg estradiol benzoate, 12 mg phenylpropionate, 60 mg testosterone propionate, 120 mg phenylpropionate and 120 mg isocaproate) had 48% secretory endometria and 9 ovulated within 6 weeks postpartum. The author considered these data showing almost half of the first cycles ovulatory important but of little practical use since most physicians advise postpartum women to avoid coitus until the return of menses.
