    Abstract:
The stimulation of L-cystine-aminopeptidase activity by estrogens in the hypothalamus and other tissues of the rat was investigated by a colorimetric method. It was shown that after injections of estrogens and progestins, there was a dose-dependent increase of enzyme activity in the hypothalamus and the paleopallium, but not in the other areas of the rat brain and other tissues. Cyclofenil and epimestrol were found to behave like conventional estrogens in this respect, while stilbestrol, ICI 46,474, and clomiphene were inactive. Testosterone, pregnandiol, corticosterone, and dexamethasone were not effective in enhancing L-cystine-aminopeptidase activity under the experimental conditions used. It is suggested that this organ-specific stimulation of enzyme activity plays a role in the regulation of gonadal function.
