  • Title: Intrauterine injection of 20 per cent saline for inducing abortion.
    Author: Cheng MC, Ratnam SS.
Journal: Singapore Med J; 1971 Oct; 12(5):259-63. PubMed ID: 5134047.
    Abstract:
Since the legalization of abortion in 1970 the Singapore University unit had performed 382 abortions. Of these 323 were first trimester pregnancies, so dilatation and curettage were done. The remaining 59 cases were beyond 12 week's gestation. Of these, 35 were terminated by hysteroctomy because they were to have abdominal sterilization at the same time. The remaining 24 were treated by intrauterine injection of 20% saline. In 18 cases aminocentrisis was followed by injection of 100-200 ml of 20% saline. When this method could not be done satisfactorily the same amount of saline was injected into the extraamniotic space via the cervix. Technique used is described. Intrauterine saline injection is considered safe and effective for terminating midterm pregnancies.
