Title: The present status of control of Culex pipiens fatigans. Author: Brown AW. Journal: Bull World Health Organ; 1967; 37(2):297-9. PubMed ID: 5300070. Abstract: At present, larvicidal attack is the only feasible measure for the control of Culex pipiens fatigans. However, in the cities of the tropics, which are the principal sites of the filariasis problem, this has usually been a losing battle. The proper method of larval control is to eliminate the breeding sites; instead there has been a great increase in polluted waters, where C. p. fatigans breed. The present situation in the control of this subspecies represents a victory for the adaptive powers of the mosquito over the chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides. Most control operations in the tropics have reverted to the old method of heavy applications of larvicidal oil, which give consistent if inadequate results. The effects of various newly developed insecticides are summarized. Organic thiocyanates and carbamate compounds have proved disappointing.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
