Title: Histological study of the endometrium of 459 intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) users. Author: Katsura S, Satodade R. Journal: Yokohama Med Bull; 1969 Oct; 20(5):137-44. PubMed ID: 5402647. Abstract: Endometrial specimens from 459 women with IUDs and 63 nonusers were examined histologically and cytologically. IUD use ranged from 10 months to 12 years. No malignancy was detected in either group. The IUD endometria had the following characteristics: (1) congestion, (2) infiltration of polymorphonuclear leucocytes and round cells, (3) follicular formation and localized squamous cell metaplasia, (4) calcified necrosis with inflammatory changes. Biopsies were taken throughout the menstrual cycle. There was discordance of the histological date of the endometrium with the chronological biopsy date in 26.9% of the nonuser proliferative phase, 57.1% nonuser secretory phase, and 33.3% nonuser ovulatory phase. In IUD users, discordance was 25.6% in the proliferative phase, 91% in the ovulatory phase, and 57.1% in the secretory phase. The ovulatory phase discordance was statistically significant (p.001). There was no difference in the histological appearance of the endometrium between IUD users under 2 years of use and over 2 years of use.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
