  • Title: Contraception and pulmonary embolism.
    Journal: N Engl J Med; 1971 Apr 29; 284(17):984-5. PubMed ID: 5573291.
    Abstract:
A brief comparison of the literature on thromboembolic complications of oral contraceptives is made with the increased mortality rate for nonpregnant females: (3.04 to 3.96 per 1,000,000) and decreased rate for males recently reported by Zimmerman, Adelson, and Ratnoff (New England Journal of Medicine, 1970). Assuming 15% of the population was using oral contraception, the increase in females means there is a fourfold increase in risk attributable to oral contraceptives. Since the number of cases was small, tests for significance would not be helpful in interpreting the data. The data indicate results similar to previously published information on contraceptive pills. The author's conclusion that the impact of oral contraceptives is "not dramatic" may be misleading.
