Abstract: Levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone and prolactin were evaluated in 52 cases of postpill amenorrhea at the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research, Calcutta, India. All 52 patients had experienced amenorrhea for one year since discontinuation of oral contraceptive therapy. The incidence of postpill amenorrhea was much higher in patients with histories of oligomenorrhea or irregular menstrual periods. No relationship was seen between the number of cycles of pills used and the incidence of postpill amenorrhea. The ratio of luteinizing hormone to follicle-stimulating hormone in all cases exceeded unity, indicating that postpill amenorrhea is a type of functional secondary amenorrhea. Levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and prolactin were evaluated in 52 cases of post oral contraceptive (OC) amenorrhea in an effort to determine the causes, the prognosis and the treatment of this entity. The cases were selected from patients with postpill amenorrhea at the Seth Suklal Karnani Memorial Hospital in Calcutta, India. The patients were instructed to report to the hospital with empty stomachs. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and prolactin (PRL) levels were estimated by radioimmunoassay, using the double-antibody technique. Gonadotropin and prolactin profiles were undertaken in 72 control patients who were in different parts of the menstrual cycle. Routine histories were taken and clinical examinations, roentgenograms of the pituitary fossa and thyroid function tests were performed. The incidence of postpill amenorrhea was much higher in patients with histories of oligomenorrhea or irregular menstrual periods. There was no relationship between the number of cycles of OCs used and the incidence of postpill amenorrhea.
