  • Title: Antisickling effects of membrane-interacting compounds.
    Author: Ohnishi ST.
Journal: Blood Cells; 1982; 8(2):337-43. PubMed ID: 6130805.
    Abstract:
Several anti-psychotic drugs were found to have an in vitro antisickling effect. A linear relationship was found between the antisickling activity and the inhibition of calmodulin stimulated phosphodiesterase activity. These membrane-interacting compounds produce a "cup-shaped" red blood cell at the concentration where they demonstrate an antisickling effect. The volume of a "cup-shaped" red cell (with chlorpromazine) does not change significantly from that of an untreated control red cell. The anti-sickling mechanism of these membrane-interacting compounds is not known at this point.
