  • Title: [Hypophysectomy in the advanced stage of carcinoma of the prostate (author's transl)].
    Author: Klosterhalfen H, Becker H, Lotzin C, Kautzky R.
    Journal: Urologe A; 1980 Mar; 19(2):85-8. PubMed ID: 6157241.
    Abstract:
22 patients with advanced prostatic cancer underwent transnasal-transsphenoidal hypophysectomy. 2 patients died immediately after the operation, when this method was introduced. Of 19 patients, who were followed at short time intervalls, 13 = 68,5% showed a good remission, which lasted on an average of 5.5 (3-8) months. The survival time of these patients with a good remission was 11.5 months, whereas in patients without any remission it was 4.8 months. We recommend the hypophysectomy in individual cases as a possible form of treatment, which might lead to relief of pain and to objective tumor remission.
