  • Title: Complications following postpartum sterilization by bilateral tubal ligation.
    Author: Cook CL, Farmer JM.
Journal: J Ky Med Assoc; 1984 Apr; 82(4):171-4. PubMed ID: 6538896.
    Abstract:
218 women, who underwent immediate postpartum sterilization by a modified Pomeroy technique between June 1973-December 1975 at Louisville General Hospital were evaluated for intraoperative, postoperative, and longterm complications. No intraoperative complications were noted. However, shortterm complications occurred in 11 (5%) of the women, 4 (2%) of which were considered major (1 patient had hypovolemic shock, 1 a right tubal abscess, and 2 prolonged ileus). Among the longterm complications were noted in many of the 107 patients who were interviewed at least 2 years postoperation were 1 pregnancy (.9%), 41 (38.3%) major menstrual alterations, and 16 (15%) subsequent gynecologic procedures. 3 women (2.8%) were considering sterilization reversal. The convenience and financial advantage of postpartum sterilization must be balanced against its morbidity. In this study, short and longterm complication rates were within the range of those reported by others for puerperal sterilization but were higher than those rates reported for interval operations.
