  • Title: Psychiatric disorders during pregnancy.
    Author: Lee SR.
Journal: Am Fam Physician; 1983 Sep; 28(3):187-94. PubMed ID: 6613797.
    Abstract:
For complete care of the pregnant patient, an understanding of the psychologic aspects of pregnancy is essential. Psychologic dysfunction must be recognized early and the need for consultation presented to the patient in a nonthreatening manner. Most psychotropic drugs can be used safely. Medication should be continued as long as the benefits outweigh the risks. The postpartum period requires special attention. While approximately 16 percent of all women have emotional dysfunction during pregnancy, the postpartum incidence has been reported to be as high as 50 percent.
