Eighty males with various stages of essential hypertension and 20 practically healthy individuals were included in this study designed to examine their platelet aggregation properties and blood viscosity and to determine the levels of prostaglandins E and F. On the basis of the results obtained, new aspects of the pathogenesis of essential hypertension were ascertained. The pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying the development of hypertensive crises and other complications of hypertension are reviewed in the light of possible PG involvement.
