Abstract: Plasticity of the c. n. s. as revealed by the general laws, mechanisms and limits of disturbed functions compensation in recovery after brain damage, is described. Data are cited showing that after special treatment and long-term training more or less effective compensation can be attained even in spinal animals and humans with spinal cord severance. The role of the sympathetic nervous system is discussed according to L. A. Orbeli's concept of the regulatory adaptive-trophic function of the nervous system.
