    Abstract:
    We have thought it worth while to review the literature of glucocorticoids given to prevent the respiratory distress syndrome in the newborn, including pathological pregnancies (refs. 6. 15, 18, 61, 69, 74, 84). This review of the literature reveals that there is a lack of homogeneity both in describing the types of studies undertaken and in describing the ways in which the corticocoids were administered. We present a scheme of treatment which is based on long acting corticoids (type: betamethasone, dexamethasone). We consider this has advantages both for the mothers and the fetuses with a minimum of secondary ill effects.
