Title: Management of moderately severe dehydration by continuous intra-gastric infusion of electrolyte solution. Author: Seriki O, Olambiwonnu NO. Journal: Trop Doct; 1978 Jul; 8(3):134-6. PubMed ID: 675804. Abstract: A pilot study is presented which attempted to determine the efficacy of glucose-electrolyte treatment via nasogastric tube in moderately severe dehydration. For this study, moderately severe dehydration was defined as weight loss of approximately 6-7% but under 10%. 15 children were studied. 11 of the 15 children (73%) improved and were discharged. Clinical improvement was supported by biochemical correction of electrolyte deficit and acidosis. 3 rehydration solutions were tested, but all included Na+, Cl-, K+, and HC03-. Serum urea fell from an initial mean value of 32.2-20 mg/100 ml. 3 children did not improve during the nasogastric administration and were given intravenous solution. 1 child died during treatment; the death is attributed to improper patient selection. The cured children showed a mean gain in weight of .7 gm (9.5%).[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
