  • Title: [Seasonality of human conception associated with births in countries bordering the Norwegian Sea - with special reference to northern Norway].
    Author: Rønnike F.
Journal: Tidsskr Nor Laegeforen; 1981 Jan 20; 101(2):151-5. PubMed ID: 7010669.
    Abstract:
A higly specific type of seasonality of human conceptions (associated with birth) in the northern part of Norway in the 19th century (1880-1890) has been correlated with the patterns of seasonality of conceptions of the counties ("amter", now "fylker") of Norway in the years 1880-1890 and 1967-1978. Nowadays, the patterns in all the counties of Norway are nearly identical regardless of the geographical position; this is in glaring contrast to the patterns for the period 1880-1890. Most of the patterns in the counties at that time are unique and are interpreted as having been caused by social factors. The herring fishery by Norwegians from the northern area and the whaling by Norwegians from the southern section of Norway resulted in prolonged seasonal absence each year of a large number of males from their female partners. The patterns for Iceland and the Faroe Islands not only in the 19th century but also now show striking resemblances with the "fisherman-patterns" of Norway in the 19th century. The seasonality patterns of conceptions in Scotland and West Greenland are unspecific and are also shown in figure form. All the figures of this paper have headings in English. (author's modified)
