    Abstract:
    It is argued that the equating of respect for patient autonomy with physician noninterference fails to take into account the constraints which illness imposes on the patient's ability to make choices. These constraints are psychological and social as well as physical and cognitive. The therapeutic relationship, accordingly, entails a moral responsibility to restore autonomous functioning by helping the patient deal with such impediments.
