Title: [Thromboembolic attacks in the central nervous system and P-pills]. Author: Lidegaard O. Journal: Ugeskr Laeger; 1982 Sep 20; 144(38):2769-72. PubMed ID: 7157502. Abstract: In a retrospective study of 91 women ages 15-40 without predisposing factors who experienced cerebrovascular ischemic attacks, it was found that 48 were users of hormonal contraception. Among the Danish population, 22% of women in the same age group used oral contraceptives (OCs). 9 of 43 nonusers were pregnant, 7 of 9 in their last trimester. The relative stroke risk in the group of users compared to nonusers was 4 or 5, depending on whether pregnant women were included in the group of nonusers or not (P0.001). There was no significant difference between the estrogen content of the OCs in the stroke group. It is concluded that OCs may at least be partly responsible for about 3/4 of the strokes attacking OC users. (author's modified)[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
