    Abstract:
    The experience of a group practice from January 1972 through December 1976 with IUDs (the Copper 7, Copper T, Dalkon Shield, Gynecoli, Lippes loop, Saf-T-Coil, and Ypsilon Y) is summarized and clinical impressions are drawn. Tables present the following data for each type of IUD (all broken down by parous vs. nulliparous women): insertion, removal, complete and incomplete expulsion, pregnancy, removal for medical reasons, removal for elective reasons, perforations, and pelvic infections. The Ypsilon Y appeared to have an undesirable number of pregnancies and removals for medical reasons. The Copper 7 appeared to have a much higher acceptance, particularly in nulliparous women. Discussion raised the points that (1) the experience of several clinics would be necessary for valid comparison; (2) copper IUDs apparently had low infection rates; (3) serum iron level and hemoglobin should be measured before and regularly during IUD use; (4) IUDs should not be inserted within 3 months of pregnancy, term or aborted.
