Title: [Breast feeding and oral contraceptives]. Author: Treffers PE. Journal: Ned Tijdschr Geneeskd; 1981 Mar 14; 125(11):425-7. PubMed ID: 7194423. Abstract: Use of oral contraceptives in the period immediately after childbirth is discussed. There is a slightly increased incidence of thromboembolic processes immediately postpartum, which could be adversely affected by oral contraceptive use. The steroids in oral contraceptives can inhibit lactation, especially if the woman is undernourished or if oral contraceptive use is begun too soon after childbirth. The quality of the milk produced, especially with respect to proteins, can also be affected. When oral contraceptives are used during the postpartum period, the progesterones and estrogens can show up in the mother's milk. It has not yet been determined if and to what extent such exposure to extraneous hormones have on the developing baby. The most likely effect would be on the hormone levels in the brain.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
