Abstract: The question which is the title of this paper may also be formulated: "What types of gastritis are of clinical relevance?" The question may be answered as follows: 1. Type I, the gastritis constellation in pernicious anemia. 2. Type II, severe antrum gastritis which tends to expand into the cardia region. Stomach ulcers are often preceded; and their localization is determined by this type. 3. Chronic atrophic gastritis of the corpus mucosa as is found in the constellation of pernicious anemia may also be a pathogenic factor in the development of stomach cancer. 4.
