Title: [Does oral contraception cause deep venous thromboses? (author's transl)]. Author: Lambrecht R, Wagemann W, Kosowski H, Fleischer GM. Journal: Zentralbl Chir; 1981; 106(16):1074-80. PubMed ID: 7345821. Abstract: From 1975 to 1980 48 women suffering from deep venous thrombosis were seen at the Surgical Dept. of the Medizinische Akademie Magdeburg. In 22 cases no objective cause could be found, 16 women, however, had been put under oral contraceptives for many months and even for years. Although there is no causal evidence between oral contraception and deep venous thrombosis until now, oral contraception has to be considered as a risk factor concerning the formation of deep venous thrombi in women. From 1975-1980, 48 women suffering from deep venous thrombosis were seen at the Surgical Dept. of the Medizinische Akademie Magdeburg. In 22 cases, no objective cause could be found; 16 women, however, were found to be taking oral contraceptives (OCs) for many months and even years. Although there has been no causal link between OCs and deep venous thrombosis, OCs must be considereed as a risk factor in the formation of deep venous thrombosis in women.
