Title: [Contraception in the eighties: a theme with variations]. Author: Diczfalusy E. Journal: Lakartidningen; 1980 Jan 16; 77(3):98-105. PubMed ID: 7354681. Abstract: Trends in contraception in the 1980s are discussed. It takes a long time to discover, develop, and market new contraceptive agents because it takes many years to complete all of the laboratory, animal, and clinical studies that are required by law before such a new agent can be marketed. An interest in the "once a month" pill has been renewed in the People's Republic of China: implantation preparations are also being studied. Post-coital preparations have side effects, but have the advantage that they need not be taken continually. Luteolytic substances may be developed to cause prevention of nidation. Vaginal rings and IUDs will be improved for safety and effectiveness. Studies done on the menstrual cycle may help improve the rhythm method. Prostaglandins, thichosantin, yuanhuacine, and zoapatle are natural substances which are being tested for inducing abortion. A contraceptive vaccine is also a possibility. For men, study of sugar derivatives, inhibin, and gossypol may lead to the development of a male pill. Research is needed to alelviate side effects and risks of present contraceptives, to develop new contraceptives, to study the psycho-social aspects of family planning, to improve the diagnosis of sterility, and to improve public access to family planning information.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
