    Abstract:
    The structure of the capsular polysaccharide from Klebsiella K17 is based on the pentasaccharide repeating-unit shown. The principal features of the structure were determined by standard methods, including 1H- and 13C-n.m.r. spectroscopy, which are shown to be complementary techniques. The position of the one beta-L-rhamnopyranosyl residue was established by selective periodate oxidation of the terminal, lateral substituent, despite the presence of in-chain sugar-units possessing alpha-glycol systems.
