  • Title: [Role of salivary glands in extrarenal production of erythropoietin].
    Author: Gerina LS.
Journal: Fiziol Zh SSSR Im I M Sechenova; 1980 Sep; 66(9):1412-7. PubMed ID: 7418919.
    Abstract:
Hemorrhage against the background of bilateral nephrectomy led to the erythroid reaction of the rat bone marrow despite reduction of erythropoietin concentration in the circulating blood. Similar effect occurred when the nephrectomy was followed by ablation of salivary and lacrimal glands. Aqueous extracts of salivary and lacrimal glands as well as of muscular tissue had no effect on medullary hemopoiesis of nefrectomized animals but increased the amount of the peripheral blood reticulocytes and the serum erythropoietic activity.
