  • Title: [Morphologic changes in different types of muscles fibers in rats during protracted hypokinesia].
Author: Kurash S, Andzheevskaia A, Gurski Ia.
Journal: Kosm Biol Aviakosm Med; 1980; 14(6):35-41. PubMed ID: 7442114.
    Abstract:
Morphological changes in different type muscle fibers of rats kept for 30 days in small enclosures were investigated. The white muscle (the uppermost layer of the musculus vastus lateralis) showed the smallest changes. In the red muscle (the innermost layer of the m. vastus lateralis) the most significant changes were seen in contractile elements, which involved lesions in Z bands. The most hypokinesia-sensitive muscle was the m. soleus, an intermediate muscle, where degenerative and atrophic changes developed in most fibers and involved all structural elements.
