Title: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the cardiac patient: a case study. Author: Schmelzer C, Stone NL. Journal: J Post Anesth Nurs; 1995 Feb; 10(1):18-20. PubMed ID: 7707246. Abstract: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the standard procedure for the surgical management of cholelithiasis. Compared with open cholecystectomy, this procedure offers shorter hospital stays, shorter recovery time, better cosmetic results, and an overall reduction in health care cost for the patient. As the number of cardiac patients having elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy increases, it is important for the postanesthesia nurse to understand the postoperative assessment and nursing interventions these patients require. Congestive heart failure and acute pulmonary edema are two potential complications resulting from insufflation of the abdomen and intraoperative fluids. This case study of a cardiac patient undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy demonstrates important postanesthesia assessment parameters.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
