Title: Gamete immunology. Author: Jones WR. Journal: Hum Reprod; 1994 May; 9(5):828-41. PubMed ID: 7929729. Abstract: An obstetrician-gynecologist provides a detailed review of gamete immunology. The brief introduction is followed by historical aspects of experimental immunization against spermatozoa and the ovum. The next section examines immunological mechanisms: modulation of immune responses to gametes and early embryos and pathogenesis of immunological infertility. Modulation of immune responses to gametes and early embryos includes sperm autoimmunity in the male, sperm isoimmunity in the female, autoimmunity in the female, and immunity to the early embryo. The article lists 10 possible ways immunological reactions to spermatozoa may reduce fertility (e.g., sperm agglutination). The next section looks at lessons learned from nature: assessment of immunity to spermatozoa, clinical significance of sperm immunity, sperm antibodies and in vitro fertilization, sperm antibodies and intrauterine insemination, sperm immunity and abortion, sperm autoimmunity and isoimmunity, and naturally occurring antibodies to the ovum's zona pellucida. An in-depth examination of contraceptive vaccine development follows which focuses on vaccine technology (e.g., biodegradable microspheres). The final sections looks at the spermatozoa and the ovum as vaccine targets. They focus on antigens of spermatozoa and the ovum, considerations of strategy, and development of the anti-sperm and anti-zona vaccines.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
