Abstract: A diversity of means are available for the attenuation of Salmonella which can be used to immunize animals and humans orally to elicit mucosal, humoral and cellular immune responses. Avirulent Salmonellae can be genetically engineered to express foreign antigens and the recombinant avirulent Salmonellae are capable of stable, high-level expression of the foreign antigen in the orally immunized animal or human host.
