    Abstract:
    There is no doubt that a healthy and well-nourished woman living in a comfortable environment is able to support the demands of pregnancy and lactation. She will also be able to protect her offspring against short periods of nutritional and environmental abuse. Good nutritional status in a woman of reproductive age before conception and during pregnancy is, therefore, of vital importance in the successful outcome of pregnancy in successive generations. This paper discusses the issues involved.
