    Abstract:
    German legislation under which sickness insurance funds may request their members to apply for rehabilitative treatment has been changed twice in the recent past. The reason for this is the intention on the part of the legislature to ensure that such rehabilitative measures are initiated as early as possible. How rehabilitative medicine adjusts flexibly to these changes, what factors the medical service of the sickness insurance funds must consider when giving advice and which alternatives are available to the organisations responsible for social expenditure, are discussed.
