Abstract: Several new techniques for diagnosis of the sexually transmitted diseases commonly seen in the United States have been developed during the past decade. The rapid, nonculture techniques for direct detection of Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and herpes simplex virus are reviewed, and their advantages and disadvantages are compared with conventional diagnostic methods.
