    Abstract:
42 women were administered artificial abortions for medical indications, primarily nervous or psychological, by means of an intraamnial instillation of a 25% saline solution. Using an electrocardiograph with abdominal leads, the exact moment of termination of the life functions of the fetus was determined. Fetal QRS complexes disappeared earlier the smaller the fetus was and the larger the saline concentration. Death occurred between 35 minutes and 6 hours, 15 minutes after the administration of the solution, making an average of 2 hours, 21 minutes. Fetuses weighed from 150 to 950 gm. Abortion occurred between 14-72 hours after the instillation, an average of 33 hours. Individual differences in the level of development of each fetus, while at the same length of pregnancy, made exact programming for a given pregnancy, moment of death, and the time of the abortion impossible.
