Title: The definition and staging of human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome appropriate for India, Madras, Tamil Nadu, 29-30 July 1995. Journal: Natl Med J India; 1996; 9(4):195-6. PubMed ID: 8772343. Abstract: The existing case definitions of AIDS are unsuitable for India for several reasons. A roundtable conference of national and international experts from Japan, Madras, Mumbai, Pondicherry, and Vellore was therefore held to reach a consensus on the definition and staging of HIV infection and AIDS which could be appropriate for India. It was proposed that HIV disease be diagnosed on the basis of laboratory evidence of HIV infection and the presence of one or more secondary conditions such as infectious diseases, neurological illnesses, malignancies, or constitutional manifestations. This paper describes the consensus reached on HIV infections and disease, the detection of HIV infection, the diagnosis of HIV disease, the staging of HIV disease, reporting for epidemiology, and prophylaxis.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
