Title: HIV and AIDS in Africa. African policies in response to AIDS in relation to various national legal traditions. Author: Alkas PH, Shandera WX. Journal: J Leg Med; 1996 Dec; 17(4):527-46. PubMed ID: 8991332. Abstract: Africa has been hit harder than any other geographic region by the HIV/AIDS pandemic, with about two-thirds of cases worldwide to date estimated to have occurred on the continent. This paper looks at current HIV and AIDS policies in Africa based upon a series of surveys of African ministries of health performed during the early 1990s. The surveys gathered information on reporting requirements, antidiscrimination measures, screening policies, blood bank safety, immigration, criminal liability, and the notification of spouses and physician clientele. Responding countries were classified by legal tradition, with data analyzed for correlations between policies and types of legal systems. Traditional African customary law, the diverse legal traditions of comparative law, and specific AIDS policies are presented and discussed.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
