Abstract: The existence of three distinct forms of meaning--unearthed, reshaped, and improvised--is claimed to be a part of every analysis. These forms are defined and distinguished from one another. Each is presented as conforming to a certain set to psychological needs in the patient and so as having no overall or general significance as to its propriety vis-à-vis the others.
