Title: A possible role of prostaglandin E1 in the mechanism of action of intrauterine contraceptive device. Author: Das R, Hrishikeshwan HJ, Bapna JS, Dandiya PC, Ramesh S. Journal: Indian J Med Res; 1977 Mar; 65(3):353-6. PubMed ID: 924547. Abstract: The present study was planned in order to investigate the possible role of prostaglandins (PGs) in the mechanism of the IUD. Since PGEs are known to be naturally occurring in the endometrium, the metabolic rate of PGE1 was studied in the human endometrial tissue. 25 healthy volunteers ages 21-35 with normal menstrual cycles who had been using an IUD for more than 1 year and an equal number of volunteers not using the IUD were the subjects of the study. Endometrial tissue was collected between 9-13 days and 20-25 days of the proliferative and secretory phases. Results showed a trend towards an increase in the metabolic rate of PGs due to the IUD in the human endometrium. The data obtained suggest that the IUD may act by increasing the turnover of PGs.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
