    Staffing practices significantly affect hospital expense control. At a 571-bed hospital in the Southwest, a redesign of the nurse staffing system reduced annual premium nursing labor expenses by $7.5 million without decreasing the nursing hours per patient day. Strategies to achieve similar cost savings at other agencies are suggested.
