    Abstract:
Data on the frequency of the CCR5 chemokine receptor-gene 32-bp deletion in seven Turkic (Bashkir, Tatar, and Chuvash) and Finno-Ugric (Mari, Komi, Mordvinian, and Udmurt) populations of the Volga-Ural region, obtained by means of the PCR technique, are presented. The deletion frequency varied from 2.17% in the northwestern ethnogeographic group of Bashkirs to 13.44% in the Tatar population, with a mean frequency value of 7.02% for the region. The only deletion homozygote found belonged to the Udmurt population. The results indicate that the frequency distribution of the mutant allele in Volga-Ural populations coincided with that in European populations.
