  • Title: [Effect of combined hormonal oral contraceptives on several body systems].
    Author: Simeonova L.
Journal: Akush Ginekol (Sofiia); 1976; 15(3):220-2. PubMed ID: 998936.
    Abstract:
Literature on the biological effects of various combined hormonal contraceptives is briefly reviewed. Laparatomy findings in women who used hormonal contraceptives include decrease in the size of ovaries, fibrous changes in the ovary, atrophy of the endometrium, and changes in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Epidemiologic data indicate increased incidence of thromboembolism in women using hormonal contraceptive agents. Prolonged use of hormonal contraceptives is associated with development of breast fibroadenomas, cellular atypia, proliferation of ductal epithelium and, in some instances, development of galactorrhea. Few studies report potential association between breast cancer and the use of hormonal contraceptives.
