  • 1. Ask the doctor. I need to catheterize myself because of bladder problems. In April 2007, I had five stents put in my heart and started taking Plavix. Since then, I sometimes see a light tinge of blood in the catheter bag, though lately the blood flow has been more substantial. The book "Worst Pills, Best Pills" says Plavix should be used for only a limited time, but my internist tells me I should be on it for the rest of my life. I am 88 years old and take aspirin (325 mg) every day. How long will I need to take Plavix?

  • 2. Ask the doctor. In October 2007, I had three Cypher stents placed in my left anterior descending artery. My doctor told me to take Plavix and aspirin indefinitely. Now I need to have a hernia repaired. My surgeon refuses to operate while I'm taking Plavix and aspirin, and said I would have to stop taking the two drugs five to six days before the operation. My cardiologist says that stopping the Plavix and aspirin, as well as the stress of the operation itself, would throw me into a "hypercoagulable state," greatly increasing my chance of developing a blood clot inside one of the stents. What should I do?

  • 5. Ask the doctor. I need surgery for a gastrointestinal problem, and my question is how to handle my antiplatelet therapy, which I have been taking for two years since I had angioplasty. I take aspirin and clopidogrel, which were started after I had a heart attack and a stent was placed to keep the narrowed artery open. Things have been going just fine. But I know the surgeon wants to stop the clopidogrel during the period around the surgery, and that worries me.

  • 6. Ask the doctors. I recently had a drug-eluting stent placed in one of my coronary arteries after an episode of severe chest pain. My doctor told me I had to take Plavix every day. Now I feel perfectly fine-except for my right hip. I need a hip replacement, but my orthopedist wants to wait until I'm off Plavix before operating. How long is long enough to be on this drug?

  • 11. Ask the doctor. I am 86 years old and have high blood pressure and diabetes. As part of my last physical exam, my doctor ordered tests to check my carotid arteries. They showed that one was nearly 70% blocked. My doctor said I had to have surgery right away of I would have a stroke. Is she right? I am the only person taking care of my 88-year-old husband, and can't be away from him for long.

  • 13. Ask the doctor. I am a 60-year-old man with several risk factors for heart disease. I take Aleve twice a day. Do I still need to take aspirin, or is the Aleve enough? I often take ibuprofen for my headaches or aching back. Now my doctor wants me to start taking aspirin, and she suggested that I ease up on the ibuprofen. Why?

  • 14. Ask the doctor. Almost every day I read how important it is for people with heart disease to take an aspirin. Unfortunately, I am allergic to aspirin. There must be others with the same problem. Are there viable alternatives to aspirin? It's discouraging to realize that I cannot have the benefits available to others.

  • 15. Ask the doctor. I have atherosclerosis in the arteries of my heart and neck, and my doctors want me to take aspirin. I also have arthritis and take Naprosyn for it every day. I have heard that Naprosyn can prevent blood clots, just like aspirin does. Can I just take Naprosyn, or do I still need to take aspirin, too, to protect my heart and brain from blood clots?

  • 16. Ask the doctor. I am 78 years old and have diabetes and a heart murmur from narrowing of my aortic valve. My doctor tells me that the narrowing is not so severe that I need surgery, but warns me that I may need an operation some day. Naturally, I would like to avoid that possibility. Is there anything I can do to reduce the risk?

  • 18. Ask the doctor. My doctor recently advised me to start taking an 81-mg aspirin once a day. I am physically active 62-year-old and have been a vegetarian-mostly vegan-for 35 years. My BMI is less than 24, my HDL is over 70, and my Framingham risk score is 8%. My only problems are systolic blood pressure in the 130s and an occasional episode of arrhythmia. I'd really rather not take aspirin. Am I being foolish in questioning my doctor's advice?

  • 19. Ask the doctor. Every day I take a baby aspirin (81 milligrams) that is coated to protect my stomach. Out of curiosity, I dropped a tablet into a glass filled with equal parts water and vinegar. Two days later, it hadn't dissolved. That has me wondering if the aspirin inside the coating gets into my stomach and bloodstream, or whether I've been unprotected against heart disease all this time?
