  • 1. Ask the doctor. In October 2007, I had three Cypher stents placed in my left anterior descending artery. My doctor told me to take Plavix and aspirin indefinitely. Now I need to have a hernia repaired. My surgeon refuses to operate while I'm taking Plavix and aspirin, and said I would have to stop taking the two drugs five to six days before the operation. My cardiologist says that stopping the Plavix and aspirin, as well as the stress of the operation itself, would throw me into a "hypercoagulable state," greatly increasing my chance of developing a blood clot inside one of the stents. What should I do?

  • 2. Ask the doctor. I need to catheterize myself because of bladder problems. In April 2007, I had five stents put in my heart and started taking Plavix. Since then, I sometimes see a light tinge of blood in the catheter bag, though lately the blood flow has been more substantial. The book "Worst Pills, Best Pills" says Plavix should be used for only a limited time, but my internist tells me I should be on it for the rest of my life.   • 4. Ask the doctor. I need surgery for a gastrointestinal problem, and my question is how to handle my antiplatelet therapy, which I have been taking for two years since I had angioplasty. I take aspirin and clopidogrel, which were started after I had a heart attack and a stent was placed to keep the narrowed artery open. Things have been going just fine.
