23. On call. I am a 64-year-old man, quite healthy except for high blood pressure, which was diagnosed last year. My doctor gave me Hydro-Diuril, which was only partly successful. Then he added Prinivil, but I had to stop it because of a terrible cough. Now he wants me to take Lopressor, but I've read the package insert and I'm worried about side effects--especially sexual problems, since I already have problems in that area. Do I have to take the pills? Simon HB. Harv Mens Health Watch; 2004 Aug; 9(1):8. PubMed ID: 15325978 [No Abstract] [Full Text] [Related]
24. Ask the doctor. A few months ago, I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. My doctor put me on blood thinners for a few weeks and then performed electrical cardioversion. Naturally, I was asleep during the procedure, but I understand that they shocked me twice and both times my heart briefly returned to a normal rhythm. But after a few seconds it went back into atrial fibrillation. NOw my doctor has offered me a choice. I can stay in atrial fibrillation and take a blood thinner for the rest of my life. Or I can try a medication to restore a normal heart rhythm and give cardioversion another try (but I'll probably have to take the antiarrhythmia drug for a long time). Any suggestions? Lee TH. 27. I take a blood thinner daily. Before year's end, I'm scheduled to have a couple of teeth pulled. My dentist wants me to stop my medicine a day or two beforehand so that there won't be too much bleeding, but a friend says her doctor told her not to stop the medication ahead of time. I'm confused. 29. On call. I am 66 years old and have had angina for nearly 5 years. I take aspirin and Zocor, but I haven't needed nitroglycerin for at least 3 years, even though I ride my bike quite hard at least 4 days a week. I've started having trouble with my erections, and now I want to try Viagra. My doctor gave me a prescription, but my wife won't let me fill it. Is Viagra safe for me? Simon HB. 36. Ask the doctor. I have used a medication called Aldomet for many years for my high blood pressure. 37. I recently had an episode of atrial fibrillation. My doctor gave me pills to slow my heart, but I then had to go into the hospital to have my heart shocked back to its normal rhythm. 38. On call. I've been taking Zocor since my heart attack in 2006. My cholesterol count has come way down, and I haven't had any heart problems. In the past few months, however, I've had some muscle aches. My blood tests don't show any muscle damage, but my doctor says Zocor may still be causing the problem. He wants me to stop Zocor for a while, but I'm worried about my heart. Is it safe for me to stop? Simon HB. Harv Mens Health Watch; 2010 Oct; 15(3):8.
